How to Use an Electric Pump for your Inflatable Paddleboard

If you have an inflatable paddle board you have probably tried to pump it up with a single cylinder hand pump that it comes with and that can be an incredibly daunting task. It takes quite a while and it drains a lot of your energy so these electric pumps are a great option. To get power you plug them into the cigarette lighter in your car. It also comes with battery clips if you want to use those.

The valve is on the back of your paddleboard. It has two positions. So, it’s just like a soap dispenser, if you push it down and turn it it’ll stay in the down position and if you push it and turn it again it’ll pop back up. You want it in the up position to inflate and the down position to deflate. There are a couple boards that are different but a majority of them are going to have those two options.

Next, you’ll have to attach your hose. You need to make sure that it has the right attachment at the end that comes with the pump. You’re just gonna plug it in and turn it so it’s nice and tight and then you’re good to go.

On the pump itself there’s a dial and you’re going to turn it to the right psi. Most boards are 15 psi. Then push the on button to turn it on. It is a two-stage pump so it’s going to start a little soft and then once it gets up a little bit it’s going to kick into that second gear and get a louder. This makes it so that you can get the board all the way up to the proper pressure.

A common mistake is to have your board not fully inflated when you’re out on the water. If that’s the case your board is going to be really unstable. It’s going to be wobbly when you’re out there, it’s going to drag in the water and just be a lot harder in general to paddle. So make sure that you get your board all the way up to the pressure that it’s supposed to be at and that’s where that single cylinder hand pump can be really hard to get it all the way up there. These pumps do the work for you. It takes about ten minutes but it depends on the size of your board.

There is also a deflate option on the pump so you can plug it into there and then suck the air back out. I like to just lay on it and take a nap and that’ll let the air out of it too. Whatever floats your boat.
