Stay Safe on the Water: Paddleboarding Lifejacket Essentials
Always Wear a Lifejacket:
Just like with boats, the U.S. Coast Guard requires lifejackets for all ages while paddleboarding. Children 12 and under must wear them at all times, while those 13 and older can have them readily available on the board. For ultimate safety, wearing it any time you are on the water is highly recommended.
Choosing the Right Lifejacket:
Traditional Vests: These offer the most buoyancy and are great for all skill levels and ages. They come in various sizes for a comfortable fit. I especially recommend them during the colder months, they provide extra insulation and security.
Inflatable Belt Packs: These are less bulky which means less overheating! They also make it easier to get back on your paddleboard if you fall off. Keep in mind that they are only suitable for strong swimmers ages 16 and above. They require manual inflation upon falling into the water.
Remember to re-arm the CO2 cartridge after each use. Watch my video to see what happens when you pull the cord to inflate. I also show you how to rearm the life jacket after use.
Disclaimer: There are auto-inflate life jacket options. However, if you fall off on accident or on purpose and don’t NEED the life jacket to inflate, then you are wasting a CO2 cartridge. For this reason I don’t recommend them for paddleboarding.

- Practice inflating your lifejacket before heading out.
- Always keep an additional CO2 cartridge on hand.
- Attach a whistle to your lifejacket for emergencies.
- Be aware of water conditions and weather forecasts.
- Never paddle alone, especially in unfamiliar areas.
